By taking the example of a European patent, this article aims to make you better understand the auto-docketing system and how the tasks are generated in the application.

The system allows to create tasks in different ways:

  • By adding an asset: When adding a patent in the application, the system will generate a particular event named "Filing event" with the following auto generated task (for a priority EP patent):
    • File Designation of InventorConfirm Payment of Claim Fees
    • Check for Publication Notice - 18 Mo.
    • File Translation of Application
    • Check for Application Filing Receipt
    • Confirm Payment of Application Filing and Search Fees

  • By changing the status of asset to “Grant”: When adding the grant information (date and grant number) new tasks are automatically created:
    • Request Unitary Effect When Applicable
    • Complete filings in EP validation countries

  • Via the manual addition of an event: Following the manual addition of an event, the system can create tasks automatically or let the user create his own task (for information or to add a document received for example).

Examples of event creating tasks automatically:

  • Communication Pursuant to Art. 94(3) Received - 4 Month Response Period
  • Communication Pursuant to Art. 94(3) Received - 2 Mo. Response Period
  • Communication pursuant to Rules 161(1) and 162 Received

Examples of event to add for information and follow-up only:

  • Application publication date
  • Notice of allowance received
  • Notice of intention to grant received

You will find in the attachment of this article all the possible events for a European patent and their related tasks.
